Vintage Japanese Woman's Haori Kimono Style Jacket Silk Cover Up - Hand Signals

"Hand Signals" Woman's Haori Jacket
It's hard to believe that a textile artist sat down next to nine yards of fabric and outlined each of these 1-2 inch abstract elements (there are hundreds!) one by one, with a resist compound. The fabric was then dyed brown except for each element, after which the resist was removed and another artist hand colored each part of each element. But that is how it was designed and patterned. (The whole cutting, lining, and sewing phases are details for another time.)
The chocolate brown background has a crepe-crinkle texture and is soft but sturdy. We could ponder each element all day but can't come up with a theme or meaning. Can you?
Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath.
